Stop testing kids
Disruptions are due to our policy and not the virus
I recently saw a colleague complaining about daycare centers closing. The lamentation was because they dropped the cloth mask mandate, kids kept testing positive, which kept leading to quarantines and closures. Sadly, no refunds.
One part of the narrative was right. Closures are incredibly disruptive. And I had sympathy for the colleague.
But other parts of the narrative were wrong. Cloth masking kids doesn’t do anything. The adult cluster randomized control trial was negative. And kids all nap together in the same room without the mask. How can anyone actually believe it helps?
One more part of the narrative is wrong. Most closures are not occuring because kids are too sick to attend daycare. Most of the staff that was out were not too sick to do their job.
Instead, closures occur because of excessive testing. Quarantines occur because of policies we have created.
For decades before COVID-19. The standard was simple. If you feel sick, stay home. If you feel up for it, go to school. Because of COVID our standards are different. If you have any tiny complaint, or if you're worried, or perhaps weekly, we will test you for COVID. And if you have it, we will screw up your life.
There is no evidence to support this change. No one has proven that by doing this fewer people get covid overall. In fact, that's unlikely to be the case, as everyone will get COVID eventually.
No one has proven that fewer people are likely to get very sick. No one has proven that there's any benefit to doing this. Instead, fear and the testing industrial complex have gotten together to create this system. Most of all, 75% of kids got COVID anyway. And that's a lowball estimate. It's probably higher right now.
This is all been massively disruptive, and serve no purpose. The burden of proof is on the individuals who think this paradigm makes sense to prove it. They have failed to do so.
So the colleague was partly correct, but partly wrong. The true threat to normal kids life is irrational policymakers; the virus is just the scapegoat.
